The ethics of artificial intelligence

Today, information technology is everywhere. More and more, our lives are shaped and influenced by it. Our systems, devices, cars and appliances work on the basis of our input, and when problems arise, we humans solve them. What would it be like if our devices could think for themselves and solve problems for us?

This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes in. The idea is that AI mimics human reasoning and makes autonomous decisions based on triggers from its environment. A device learns to make decisions independently by recognising patterns and following algorithms — it makes mistakes and learns from them to become more effective. This is also known as machine learning.

On the one hand this can bring great benefits to humanity; on the other, it also poses a risk, because systems can make mistakes that, in some situations, have fatal consequences. That is why the legal and ethical frameworks around AI are so important. The dilemma of AI is ultimately: to what extent do we let AI shape and influence our lives?
